How much hay does a horse need in one month?
I'm renting a stable and some people want to know if hay is included in the rent.
There are a lot of things that can play into this answer but I will try to help with it. I will base it on the horses that I have and how we feed. We have 3 horses on a 7 acre lot that is more wooded than anything (although there is grass). In the winter they get fed grain 2 times a day (2 large coffee cans full each time) and also get hay twice a day (several flakes each…about a half a bale). So at that rate figure on about a bale a day, so 30 or so a month. During the spring/summer when more grass is available they still get grain twice but hay only once.
The horses that are on the large 30 acre plot get grain once a day and hay once a day during winter months and grain only once a day during spring/summer.
Hope this helps.

Brother expects a large round bale- 6/800 lbs to last a month for 1 horse, 2 little ponies. Previously fed a small square bale- 50lbs- every 2 days to to 2 full/ medium size horses when confined bad weather. Old draft horse team is good for a bale -50lb- a day in winter confinement. how big a horse and what temperature? A little corn or/and oats helps keep horse warmer.

It will vary wildly with your horse's metabolism, activity level, whether you have it on pasture, if you feed grain also, the type of hay, the size of the horse, if you need to put weight on, take weight off, etc. etc. etc. Are you buying a horse? If so, I would ask the current owner how much hay they go through a month. That will give you a much better idea than anyone here can without knowing the horse. I have had a number of different horses over the years, most about the same size, with wildly varying hay intake.
