What is the best hay to feed a horse battling EPM?
I am feeding him a supplement to boost his immune system. I read somewhere that I should also be feeding him alfalfa hay. He gets T & A now, but should I switch to straight alfalfa or just a T & A with a higher alfalfa content?
My horse has already completed Marquis treatment. I just want to help rebuild his immune system (which becomes weakened and depleted from the medication) in order to prevent relapse and keep him "fighting" this terrible sickness.
I would highly recommend you consult your vet about this. It’s the the best information and safety your going to get, and not by guessing on what you think is best or others. Best of luck

T&A is fine. If you can find some with a little more alfalfa it would be good, but any T&A should really be ok. You may want to have the hay analyzed to see what the folic acid content is, since that's the prime reason for feeding the alfalfa.

Try to look at everything you feed your horse as though it is medication prescribed as treatment. Food and metabolism is about chemistry, just like drugs are. Anything you do in that regard has got to be balanced and overseen by someone with knowledge of that chemistry. The vet is educated to make decisions on the best diet for your horse, so the vet should be the one to advise you on this. He/she understands the pathophysiology EPM represents, and how to deal with it.

From your description, it sounds like your horse is being treated with the old py/sulfa regimen which puts your horse at great risk for folic acid deficiency and severe anemia among other things. And this treatment has a pretty negative relapse rate and the time of treatment can be so long. To the best of my knowledge, Marquis is the newest and most beneficial treatment – 28 days is length of treatment, and there are ZERO side effects and relapse rate is very much improved. You really didn’t say if he was being treated other than with the immune system supplement but I thought you were concerned about the deficiencies because of your hay question. Treating with Marquis does not warrant any changes in diet or nutrition because of the lack of side effects. If you are giving him mainstream medical treatment, check it out. you can always switch treatments. good luck to you. this can be such a horrible disease. I so hope your horse recovers well
