I am training my horse for pole weaving?
I am training my quarter horse to do pole weaving, he keeps having trouble bending at the last pole on his way down. What do I do?
Is your horse bending really wide around the last pole?? More circle ground work, like dressage work.
When you do the circle work, gently pull him into a mid-sized circle, pushing in with the inner leg to get him to bend his back into a C-shape. Do it in both directions, not just the direction that he’s having problems with. Then he’ll be more balanced. Horses are just like people, they work better on either their right lead or their left. You need to work the “hand” that they are worse with until they get comfortable with it.
I learned about this when I was in training for hunt seat. I used the same horse for everything, pole bending, trail riding, hunt seat, jumping, team penning, etc. I noticed after learning that in hunt seat, his pole times were quicker and he was bending around the end poles tighter than he ever had before.
Another question, what bit do you have your horse in? My horse always bent best in a sliding gag bit.
